Today, just as the cold snap moves on, you will use a chart to help make a fun drink called a Jack Frost Mocktail. Next, we will read an adventure story about surviving in cold, frost, and snow. We’ll wrap up with an project and tell about what Jack Frost may do when the wind blows.
Math
The polar vortex is a large, cold air mass that spins around the North Pole. For the last 5 days, strong winds pushed this icy air south, making our town much colder than normal. This week it has brought snow, icy weather, and frost on windows to us and to the rest of New England.
Some people say that Jack Frost is the one who paints frost on windows and covers the ground with ice and snow. Jack Frost comes from old stories told in Europe about a spirit who brings cold weather. Over time, Jack Frost became a fun way to explain winter’s chill and the magic of frost.
Today we’ll start with a mocktail in honor of Jack, but we’ll have to tinker with the recipe before we mix anything. Each recipe makes 2 servings, so, first, we’ll have to do figure out the ingredients for 1 serving. The recipe is also written with a different type of measuring cup we don’t have so we’ll have to use the chart below to convert to a measure we do have.

ELA
We’ll read and respond to a shortened famous story, To Build a Fire, about surviving in winter. We’ll respond to it with an art project.
Math Objective:
Students will practice converting cups to ounces and vice versa using a Jack Frost Mocktail recipe, reinforcing functional math skills.
7.RP.A.1 – Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world problems.
7.NS.A.3 – Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers.
ELA Objective:
Students will read a modified version of Jack London’s “To Build a Fire”, then complete a Jack Frost-themed craftivity to reinforce comprehension and creative expression.
