Traditions Around the World

The Yam Festival

In Nigeria, people have a big fest to say thanks for yams. Yams are a kind of crop that grows in the sun and rain. At the fest, men and women cook yams in pots. They mash them to make a dish called pounded yam. Kids clap and sing as they wait to eat. The people all sit to eat as one big group.

The fest has more than food. People dress up in bright red, yellow, and green clothes. They play drums and dance to the beat. The king of the town may give a yam to the group as a gift. This is his way to wish them good days ahead. At the end, the people are full of joy and thanks for the yams and for each other.
