Shab-e Yalda – Warmth on the Longest Night

  2. We will create our own illustrated poems to share (volunteers only).
  3. We’ll look at math and watermelons (a favorite fruit at Yalda) and finally…
  4. Create a snack to see us through the longest night.

Math & ELA Objectives & Standards

Math Objective

Students will practice identifying and creating equivalent fractions using hands-on activities connected to the theme of Shab-e Yalda.

ELA Objective

Students will learn about the Persian winter solstice celebration, Shab-e Yalda, and practice identifying word meanings in context. Students will engage with a simple text, answer comprehension and vocabulary questions, and complete a hands-on craft to reinforce learning.

RI.7.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.

7.NS.A.3: Solve real-world problems involving operations with rational numbers, including fractions.
